Understanding Defensible Space
FireSmart principles divide the area around your home into priority zones. Zone 1, the critical first 10 metres from your structure, should be kept free of combustible vegetation, wood piles, and flammable materials. Zone 2, from 10 to 30 metres, requires thinned and spaced trees with pruned lower limbs and cleared brush. Zone 3, from 30 to 100 metres, benefits from forest thinning that breaks up the continuity of the tree canopy and removes dead standing timber.
